Alexandrite is a rare and highly prized gemstone known for its remarkable color-changing properties. This unique effect, called pleochroism, allows the gemstone to exhibit different colors under different lighting conditions.

Key Features of Alexandrite:

1. Composition and Structure:

Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl, composed of beryllium aluminum oxide (BeAl₁₂O₁₈). Its crystal structure contributes to its hardness and exceptional color-changing ability.

2. Color Change:

   - The most distinctive feature of alexandrite is its color change, which typically shifts from green in daylight or fluorescent light to red or purplish-red under incandescent light. The intensity of this color change can vary, with more pronounced changes being more valuable.

3. Color Range:

   - In daylight or fluorescent light, alexandrite usually appears green to bluish-green. Under incandescent light, it transforms into shades of red, pink, or purplish-red. The best quality stones exhibit a vibrant green-to-red color change.

4. Hardness and Durability:

 Alexandrite ranks 8.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it quite durable and suitable for various types of jewelry.

5. Occurrence:

High-quality alexandrite is extremely rare. Notable sources include Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Russia. Russian alexandrites from the Ural Mountains were particularly renowned for their exceptional color change and quality.

6. Historical Significance:

 Discovered in Russia in the 19th century, alexandrite was named in honor of Tsar Alexander II. Its unique color-changing properties and rarity quickly made it a favorite among collectors and jewelers.
